The Tony Awards

So tonight is the Tony Awards. For those of you who don't know the Tony Awards are the Academy Awards for Broadway. I think the first year I ever watched them was maybe grade 9. I remember it was the year that the Grease revival with Rosie O'Donnell was up for best revival. I don't remember much of them, but I do remember loving the fact that I got to see these huge Broadway shows in the comfort of my own living room. It was so exciting for me - because up until that point my musical theatre knowledge was so incredibly limited. So from there I don't think I have missed a year. In grade 12 they had a 'wet grad' on the night of the Tonys - guess where I was? One of my favourite Tony stories to share is the summer I worked in Barkerville. No cable anywhere except the one redneck type bar, and so what did we do? We begged and pleaded with the owner to let us put the awards on. They said it was alright if we kept drinking all night. So to the sounds of hippies and logger types we enjoyed performances from Wicked, Avenue Q and Fiddler on The Roof... It truly was great.

I love the years when they have an actual host - Rosie was one of my faves, Hugh Jackman was great too - and tonight is Whoopi Goldberg, should be incredible. On top of that the lifetime achievement award is going to Stephen Sondheim -- hopefully they will have something masterful planned.

Hopefully you'll all tune in. It's on CBS tonight starting at 8.
